About us

The Carer's Room is an independent UK information site written for the family member, partner, parent, adult child or close friend of a person whose gambling has moved outside GamStop. This page sets out who we are, what we publish, how we produce and check the writing, what our editorial independence actually means in practice, and how to reach us if a correction is needed.

Our editorial mission

The Carer's Room exists because carers and families affected by a loved one's gambling deserve a source of plain, non-judgemental UK information that does not talk down, does not moralise, and does not disguise a commercial pitch inside a support article. Almost every source of consumer-facing writing about non-GamStop sites is written for the person doing the gambling, and most of it is written by affiliate networks whose primary business is to steer traffic towards operators. This site occupies a different corner of the internet. We do not send traffic to operators, we do not accept advertising, and we do not carry sponsored placements. Every page is written for the person who is worrying about somebody else, and every page ends with a signpost to GamCare, GamAnon, the NHS and the free debt advice services that can carry a household through the weeks and months around a gambling problem.

Our editorial voice is deliberately quiet. We write in short sentences and unshowy paragraphs, and we resist two temptations common in this field. The first is the false-optimism script that promises a family can love a person out of an addictive pattern if they only find the right words. The second is the fatalism script that says nothing can help. Neither is true, and the middle ground is where families actually live. Everything we publish is grounded in the therapeutic literature on gambling harm, the source documents from the UK Gambling Commission, GamStop, GamCare, BeGambleAware and gov.uk, and the standing framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. That combination is the point of the site, and it is what we would want a friend of ours to have in the small hours of a difficult night.

How we produce, check and update content

Every page is written by our named author, Miriam Whitby, who has written for family-support publications and community mental-health charities for close to two decades. Miriam sits down with the primary source documents, checks their publication date and any recent press releases, and translates them into sentences a worried carer can read at eleven o'clock at night. She keeps a running note of the updates she has made and why, so a reader can trace the reasoning behind a claim if a claim looks odd. She works with subject specialists on the more technical chapters, in particular the payments and legal sections, and reads out the near-final draft to somebody outside the field to catch any place the writing has slipped into shorthand.

Every page is reviewed by our named reviewer, Jane Cotter, a family therapist registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. On each update Jane checks that the writing does not shame the person gambling, does not romanticise their behaviour, and does not place unrealistic responsibility on the family member reading. She reads for the person she might see in the consulting room the following morning, and asks whether the page will hurt or help. Content is refreshed on a rolling schedule that reflects public source updates, and every page carries a "last updated" date so the reader knows how current the writing is at any moment. Where a claim depends on a statistic or a piece of law, we cite the source directly at the point of use.

Editorial policy on operator names, bonuses, and affiliate links

The Carer's Room takes no money from any gambling operator, affiliate network, comparison site, casino group, or advertising broker, and it never will. The site has no commercial relationship with any brand in the sector and no financial incentive to steer readers towards any product. We do not name operators, we do not review casinos, we do not publish bonus tables, we do not publish rankings, and we do not carry promotional codes. When we describe an offshore site or a UKGC-licensed operator we do so at the level of category rather than brand, because the risks are structural to the category rather than specific to the brand. This is a deliberate editorial choice and it is not up for negotiation.

What we do publish is factual information about the mechanics of GamStop, the UKGC framework, the legal position of a UK adult playing outside that framework, the practical realities of payments and identity checks, and the full landscape of UK support services available free at the point of use. Where a helpline number is worth memorising, we make it easy to see. Where a support service exists, we name it, describe it, and give the reader enough information to decide whether to reach for it. That is the shape of the value the site is designed to deliver, and it is the reason we exist.

Contact and corrections

If you spot a factual error on any page, if a link no longer works, if a phone number has changed, or if you think a paragraph has slipped into a tone the site should not use, please write to the editor. The address is [email protected] and every message reaches Miriam directly. We reply to every genuine correction, and where a change is warranted we make it promptly and log it in the page's update history so readers can see what has changed and why.

Our reviewer is Jane Cotter, family therapist, BACP Registered. Jane's role is editorial rather than clinical, and she is not able to provide therapy or clinical guidance through the site. If you are in acute distress, please ring Samaritans on 116 123, which is free, twenty-four hours, and open to anyone.
